I had the time of my life in the Philippines, and with Thailand, both are my favorite countries far from any other country until now. However, in comparison to Thailand, it comes at a price in the Philippines. In the end, the Philippines turned out to be the most expensive country in Southeast Asia for me.
Why are the Philippines more expensive?
There are multiple reasons to that I guess, but the two most obvious reasons are that you are forced to take flights all the time instead of buses or trains and the tourist industry is just experiencing its boom, and the infrastructure can’t keep up with the demand. This significant demand and not enough supply leads to higher prices for tourists.
The geological conditions of the Philippines is a blessing and a pain in the ass at the same time. A lot of beautiful Islands, millions of beaches and an amazing underwater world are the positives sides of so many Islands. The negative aspect is that you are forced to fly from destination to destination. There might be boats, but they take days to get you from Island to Island. In addition to that, I made a mistake to not book any of my flights in advance and like that I ended up spending a lot of money on my trips. Only from Cebu to Siargao and from Siargao to Coron I ended up paying 350 euros. But even if you book long in advance, the flights will always be more expensive then a bus in Thailand for example.
Hostels are more expensive
The other fact is that Hostels and Hotels are relatively expensive and are in terrible condition. 11 Euros for a bad Hostel is nothing special. A non-AC room with a tiny shower is what 40 euros gets you in Coron. And most accommodations are often fully booked and extending is rarely possible.
Also, food is quite expensive and compared to Thailand double or even up to 4 times the price. The lack of Street food makes it hard to find cheap food, and you end up spending 5 to 10 euros in a restaurant.
What is cheap?
Cheap are buses, often the taxis and tricycles if you know the prices and don’t get charged more and tours are usually also very affordable. Even to take a private boat and do an Island hopping tour is quite affordable.
My average daily spending in the Philippine is 63 euros
By booking in advance, choosing Islands which are nearby and eating more Street food I undoubtedly could have saved a lot of my money but in the end, the Philippines are still a lot more expensive compared to Thailand or Vietnam. However, this isn’t a reason at all to not go! It’s at the same time one of the best countries with the friendliest people and most fantastic nature.
